Reducing Petroleum Consumption from Transportation
نویسنده
چکیده
The United States consumed more petroleum-based liquid fuel per capita than any other OECDhigh-income country—30 percent more than the second-highest country (Canada) and 40 percent more than the third-highest (Luxemburg). This paper examines the main channels through which reductions in U.S. oil consumption might take place: (a) increased fuel economy of existing vehicles, (b) increased use of non-petroleum-based low-carbon fuels, (c) alternatives to the internal combustion engine, and (d) reduced vehicles miles travelled. I then discuss how the policies for reducing petroleum consumption used in the US compare with the standard economics prescription for using a Pigouvian tax to deal with externalities. Taking into account that energy taxes are a political hot button in the United States, and also considering some evidence that consumers may not correctly value fuel economy, I offer some thoughts about the margins on which policy aimed at reducing petroleum consumption might usefully proceed. ∗I benefited from discussions with Hunt Allcott, Severin Borenstein, Joseph Doyle, Stephen Holland, Jonathan Hughes, Kenneth Gillingham, Donald MacKenzie, Joan Ogden, and Victor Stango. The Impact of Petroleum Product Intensity, Gasoil consumption and GDP on CO2 Emissions in Transportation Sector of Iran
The present study, in addition to investigating the impacts of GDP and gasoil consumption as the biggest consumed petroleum product in Iranian transportation sector, by introducing petroleum product intensity, studied their effects on CO2 emission in this sector. To evaluate the impact of the variables, we estimated an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model between the years 1996 and 201...
متن کاملChina's transportation energy consumption and CO2 emissions from a global perspective
Rapidly growing energy demand from China's transportation sector in the last two decades have raised concerns over national energy security, local air pollution, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and there is broad consensus that China's transportation sector will continue to grow in the coming decades. This paper explores the future development of China's transportation sector in terms of se...
متن کاملOptimal Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle Design and Allocation for Minimum Life Cycle Cost, Petroleum Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology has the potential to help address economic, environmental, and national security concerns in the United States by reducing operating cost, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and petroleum consumption from the transportation sector. However, the net effects of PHEVs depend critically on vehicle design, battery technology, and charging frequency. To e...
متن کاملComments on the Treatment of Electricity Used by Electric Vehicles in the EPA’s Proposed Clean Power Plan Rule Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0602
There are a number of state and utility policies that reduce total carbon emissions, while shifting emissions from other sectors to power plants. The most significant are policies to expand the use of electric vehicles (EVs) 1 . Increased deployment of EVs will increase electricity consumption and thus will generally increase carbon emissions by utilities but in most states will reduce total ca...
متن کاملMixed Modes Fracture and Fatigue Evaluation for Lithium-ion Batteries
Lithium ion batteries have become a widely known commodity for satisfying the world’s mobile energy storage needs. But these needs are becoming increasingly important, especially in the transportation industry, as concern for rising oil prices and environmental impact from fossil fuels are pushing for deployment of more electric vehicles (EV) or plug in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEV) and renew...
